The origins of a legend

Bristol earned its fame thanks to glassmaking, where one craftsman stood out among fellow artisans for manufacturing pieces of intense blue glass using cobalt, known as Bristol blue glass. Harveys decided to start using this type of glass in its bottle design, making it the first wine merchant to give its wines this unique and characteristic personality.

“If that’s the Milk, then this is the Cream”

Back in those days, a very popular sherry was sold called “Bristol Milk”. On one occasion the producers received a visit from a lady aristocrat, who was invited to try a new version of Bristol Milk. After partaking of the beverage, she added: “If that is the Milk, then this must be the Cream”, and so, in honour of this inspired compliment, it was decided to call this new sherry Bristol Cream. And a new category was born at Harveys.

A golden wine, golden crown
Harveys is the only Spanish product that boasts the official “Royal Warrant” seal as a supplier to the British Royal Household. It was granted in 1895 during the reign of Queen Victoria and has since continued to provide sustenance to successive monarchs to this day. This is indeed a proud achievement and a tribute to the excellence of our sherry.

Casks

Known as “butts” in the Marco de Jerez region, these casks are made from American oak. The presence of air in the butts plays an important role: sherries may be aged biologically under a veil of flor (yeast) or through an oxidative ageing process whereby the interaction of oxygen and wood produces the characteristic darker colours.

The wine which is ready to bottle is taken from the Solera row. The Solera is refilled with wine from Criadera I, and this is then filled with wine from Criadera II. This process continues until the last Criadera is filled with the current year’s vintage. This process ensures that the butts are never emptied.
